Countdown to Diamond Status in the US!

Well, since 21 has now been certified 9x platinum in the US, it seems like a good time to start a countdown to Diamond Status (10 million copies sold). This is a huge deal because the last album certified diamond took ten years to get there (Eminem). Has Usher reached it yet? He's really close but Confessions has been out since 2004.
This is a huge achievement because albums don't sell in the digital age. Singles are picked or tracks are illegally downloaded. But albums rarely sell like they used to (like when Confessions came out or before).
This may be the last diamond cert we see in the US for a long, long time (if ever). Maybe Adele 24?!

Here is how 21 got here:

21' certified 6x platinum in the US - 1/19/2012
'21' certified 7x Platinum in the US - 2/14/2012
'21' certified 8x Platinum in the US - 3/02/2012
'21' certified 9x Platinum in the US - 4/05/2012

Time to place bets on day it reaches the diamond!

Certifications are given out by shipped sales (to retailers, who purchase them from record co). So 21 is now well over 9x platinum sold to stores. The record company has to prove their sales to retailers before RIAA will certify album.

Media Traffic ww and Billboard in the US (Nielsen Soundscan) count sold to consumers (and MT doesn't count every country).
They will have 21 sales at 8.64 million in the US as of Friday. That's the number you are thinking of.

So really there will be diamond status on shipped to stores sales and diamond on consumer sales (from store to consumer). But all certificates are based on shipped because that is when the record company sells them.
Geez, can I make that any more confusing?! I think a third grader could have done a better job.

Dont worry she will :P Anyways she has been selling very fast and as shades said an album hasnt hit diamond this fast for a very long time.
