21 Era Awards and Broken Records

Postby shadesofblack » Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:23 pm

So here's a start to the records and awards Adele and 21 have achieved this year. Some of this is repeated but I just copied and pasted stuff I've posted mainly on twitter. Sandrine, you want to add your stuff? And if someone wants to clean this up and make it look like a real list, this would be really cool to put together! A way of saying goodbye, in style, to the 21 era.

From Soundscan/BillBoard (US). Best Selling Artist, Best Selling Album, Best Selling Physical Album, Best Selling Digital Album, Best Selling Internet Album, Best Selling Digital Song, Best Selling Digital Track, and Most Played Song on the Radio. 21 also scored the title of Best Selling Digital Album of All Time.

2012 Grammy wins for Album of The Year, Record of the Year, Song of The Year, Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Vocal Performance, and Short Form Music Video.

One of only two people ever to have won all of the top four Grammy awards. Best New Artist, Album of The Year, Record of the Year, Song Of the Year. (Christopher Cross won all four in one year). So she is the only artist ever to have been named Best new artist and come back and swept the other three with a different album. (Nora Jones did not write the song of the year so she didn't sweep).

21 has most combined weeks at # 1 in US and UK ever (46 total weeks).

First woman ever to win Best artist, best album and best song of the year, Billboard..

In the US, since release in Feb 2011, 21 has only fallen out of top 5 once (7).

First artist album to spend 60+ weeks in the Top 5 in both US and UK.

In 2010, Adele received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Hometown Glory". Random but no one mentions this.

21 hit number 1 in more than 26 countries,

Adele is the first artist in Nielsen SoundScan history to have the year's number one album (21), number one single ("Rolling in the Deep"), and number one music video.

At the 2011 American Music Awards on 20 November, Adele won three awards; Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, and Favorite Pop/Rock Album for 21

With 23 non-consecutive weeks at number 1 in the US, Adele broke the record for the longest number 1 album by a woman in Billboard history, beating the record formerly held by Whitney Houston's soundtrack The Bodyguard

On 9 December, Billboard named Adele artist of the year, Billboard 200 Album of the year (21), and the Billboard Hot 100 Song of the year ("Rolling in the Deep"), becoming the first female ever to top all three categories.

21 achieved the biggest weekly sales increase following a Grammy win since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. 735k

The album spent its 23rd week at number one in March 2012, making it the longest-running album at number one since 1985 and 21 became the fourth best-selling album of the past 10 years in the United States.

On the week ending 3 March 2012, Adele became the first solo female artist to have three singles in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, and the first female artist to have two albums in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 and two singles in the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously

Billboard also announced that Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" is the biggest crossover hit of the past 25 years, topping rock, pop, AC, R&B/hip-hop, dance and Latin charts. It went on to chart on 12 different radio formats.

In US, Adele is one of four female artists to have an album chart at number one for more than 13 weeks (the other three artists being Judy Garland, Carole King, and Whitney Houston

At the 2012 Ivor Novello Awards in May, Adele was named Songwriter of the Year, and "Rolling in the Deep" won the award for Most Performed Work of 2011

In April 2012, American magazine Time named Adele one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

People named her one of 2012 Most Beautiful at Every Age.

So proud of Adele!
I'm adding a few to the list. :)

On average, a copy of 21 was sold every 6.5 seconds in the year 2011.
In the entirety of 2011, only one release of a Concert DVD sold more than 100,000 copies, and that is Adele's Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
Adele's "21" has spent 66 weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard Charts since the day of its release and never left it.
Adele became the only artist to sell 1 million or more copies of three different songs in the first quarter of 2012.
Adele's 21 sold 3,772,000 copies in 2011 in the UK alone, the biggest-selling album for that year.

21 is the only album in UK history to sell over 3 million copies in one year.
Just read this one: If 21 makes it back to #1 next week, it will hold the record for longest span between first hitting number 1 in March '11 to going back to number 1 next week, June 13, 2012.
From NF:
The record before was Thriller which was #1 which first hit #1 on Feb 26, 1983 and last on April 14, 1984.
One in six households in the UK own 21.
